You can apply for a tourist visa from the China embassy in Tokyo.

Ram, save time by making a copy of your passport (which shows your photo, d.o.b etc) and your alien registration card. You can download the application form in the net or get it at the embassy. You can also make a passport size picture from their photo machines inside. The line is long, so get there at 9AM together with your return ticket, letter of invitation to the conference and hotel reservation. My travel agent gave me the letter which showed my e-ticket and hotel reservation, they accepted it. You will pay the amount when you pick the visa after 4 days on the first floor. Visa application is on the 3rd floor. Embassy is 10 minutes walk from Roppongi station.

You tick the reason why you are going there. You will find this in the application form. You can't apply for a student visa if you are not studying in China. I guess it will be a business visa for you.
