My family and I are planning atrip to China visiting Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Japan.  How many days do you recommend in each City? Are those place fairly close by? How much money will I need? Will a rental car help navigate between the cities?

Are you rich in time? If yes, i think you should stay in Hong Kong for three days and Shanghai for five days and Beijing a week. You can fly to Hongkong first and then go to shanghai and then beijing. Those cities are not very near actually. As for the cost, it depends on how you travel. You may need to take a flight from Hong Kong to Shanghai and then take a train to Beijing. Quite convinient. By the way, it is now summer holiday in China, there are a lot of people going out for traveling, you may need to book your hotel and ticket in advance.Ok, have you travel to China before, you can consider to follow a travel agency, also a good choice.
