I'm an American living in Taiwan, and i was hoping to go on a vacation to China. This is difficult since there is no Chinese embassy in Taiwan. I was going to go to Japan to apply for a visa, but after reading these posts, it sounds like i need a Japanese residency card. Is there any other way to apply for a visa without having this?

The rule of the China embassy in Japan has changed now, aliens staying in Jpan for less than 90 days just have to provide a record of their valid entry to Japan for the China visa application.
