I have read that China has a week long National day celebration at the beginning of October that can cause some lack of services, inability to get tickets, etc. Is this something that needs to be planned around?

It is true that most of the scenic spots are crowded with tourists because of their National Holiday in the first week of October. Also, the air tickets, train tickets or hotel rooms are in great demands. If your schedule is flexible, I suggest you avoid traveling during that periods.
