About:China Train

HELLO TO ANDREW,MRS FLORA AND MRS FLORA, thankyou so much for your kind and informative replies. I will land at shanghai at 10pm on the 14th and need to find a hostel or cheap accomodation to stay the night and book my ticket from there if they can help me.
Do you have any cheap accomodation or hostels that would be able to help.
On the train I know it is long but if I cannot get a sleeper I would take a seat so that may help. Do you have any contacts I can ring in dhanghai to assist or names of a hostel.
I would like to catch train to nanning on 15th so any assistance would help and I have no mandarin so will be more difficult.

I got a good hostel nearby the Shanghai South Railway Station. It is the Feng Ye Nanzhan Super 8 Hotel. The room rate is around ￥170 per room per night and they can reserve the train tickets for you. You'd better to contact them for more detailed info. at 86-21-5150 7888. Good Luck for you! :)

U can buy tickets at the station but have someone - hotel/hostel wirite it out in mandarin to show at ticket booth. Go hard seats - cheaper and fine. China Rails is great; cheap, effiicent and safe. Just watch out for your bags. Don't leave hanging around.They will 'walk.'

Outside of big hotels and deaprtment stores, credit cards not much use in China. U need cash - lots of it. Just draw out from hole in wall what you need. Buses, trains, cabs, small hotels, shops, food, all want cash

Obviously you need to buy a China SIM card. Not exepnsive

As someone else said, train is ok for shorter trips - 2-3 hours but long trips, better to search out online a discounted air ticket. Try Spring - I thnk they are still going
