About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

Hi, do I need a visa if I am just passing through the airport in Shanghai? I will have a 16 hour layover there on my way to Europe. I am an American citizen.

No, you don't need a visa for your transit at Shanghai Airport with your USA passport.

Thank you. My friend said I needed one, but I was unsure as I was just passing through the airport, not actually leaving it. So thanks for the verification.
