About:China Visa

I am a Canadian citizen. I am entering China by land at Hekou in Yunnan for a two week holiday. I arrive by train in Lao Cai (Vietnam) and cross the bridge by foot. I neither enter nor exit by air thus it is impossible for me to have a return plane ticket, as some have suggested is required. In addition, will I be able to get a tourist visa in Hanoi in a few days?

If you travel by train, you can use your train tickets instead. You can get a tourist visa in Hanoi.
