About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

I was told that if you're a US traveling to Hong Kong or Macau you DO NOT need a visa if staying less then 90 days. Is this TRUE? Any info from you guys would be great. Thanks.

Yes, Americans are free of visa to Hk for less than 90 days, but you are only exempt of visa to Macau for less than 30 days.
