Meanwhile, you won't be issued the visa if you don't have air or train tickets.
I think you just go to China for a visit, then you need a L tourist visa, so you should provide the following documents for your application at least:
1. Your passport with blank pages and at least 6 months validity left before expiration.
2.A truly and completely filled application form affixed with one passport-sized photo.
3. Round-trip air ticket
4. Hotel reservation.
