As a general question, is it difficult to catch a train without reservation, for example we are leaving Beijong tonight to Xian. Can we get there 2H in advance and catch a train?

Don't bet! You are suggested to buy the tickets in advance. In China, train tickets can not be reserved or prebooked. You need to purchase them on the spot 7-10 days prior to our traveling day.
