You can extend your visa to a tourist visa within the Chinese border. You should go to the local public securtiy bureau exit & entry department.

Last week I asked the PSB Entry-Exit Bureau in Beijing about changing my X visa to an L visa when it expires. They categorically stated that it cannot be done; you must leave the Mainland.

Of course, other cities may be completely different.
