About:Chinese Embassies and Consulates

I am an American student currently studying in Saint-Petersburg. I would like to visit China for a couple weeks. I understand that I can apply for a Chinese Visa at the Chinese Consulate here in Saint-Petersburg, but do I need a formal invitation?

Just for sightseeing in China, no invitation letter is needed for application.
