I am planning to go down to Hualien - Taroko gorge between 14 to 16 june. Is it advisable? And it is safe to do a self tour through the gorge, i.e. rent a scooter?

Yes, it is a good place to visit and favored by expats from European, American countries. It is safe. For it is a resort famous for mountains, valleys, waterfalls or so, you may need a local resident to be your guide. You need to climb the rock in someplace. The gorge is free, no ticket should be paid.
