He made the terracotta army becasue he thought that they should take care of him even if he passes away. He thought that he still had power.

Ok So I'm learning this in school and he wanted it built to protect his body from enemies! The place with his actual body is supposedly covered in booby traps! Nobody has seen Shi Huangdis body but they say he's wearing either jade or emerald body suit. Anyway he built it cause he wanted to be protected and also because it showeed power. Hope I helped! Except I just realized you asked this in 2009, but i typed all of this so im just gonna post it and maybe help somone else.

It was because he was scared of death and he wanted protection even in his afterlife.
No one was to know where his tomb was at that time, for he wanted safe and secure.

The Terracotta Warriors were buried with the first Emperor of China because the ancient Chinese believed in life after death. They were made to protect the emperor from enemies. They were also a sign of power and wealthiness
