There are several ways to tell if it is real. One is to take a pair of scissors and with one blade, scratch the piece in an inconspicuous place so you don't damage it. If it is real, it will only leave a line that will rub right off. Another way is to weigh it both in and out of water and calculate specific gravity. Last but not least, have it lab tested.
