About:China Embassy in Thailand

I am a U.S. citizen who will be in Bangkok for about one week later this month. I am planning to go to China in mid-April and do not have time to get a visa before going to Thailand, since I need my passport. I would like to apply for the visa while in Bangkok. Can it be issued while I wait? If not, if I go to the Embassy on Friday morning, do you know when I could get my passport back? Many thanks in advance for your help!
