About:Chinese Embassy in Japan

Hello
I'm a New Zealand citizen currently on a working holiday visa in Japan (it's not a long term visa). I want to travel across China and into Kazakstan (from Beijing to Wulumqi, then across the border) at the end of March. Do I need any special permits? and do I need to have a return or onward ticket? Any help would be great
Thanks
Mark

You need the visas to enter China and Kazakstan. How long will you stay in China? Is it just a short time of transit? For transit, you need a ticket of your final destination.

You need a China tourist visa (category: L) according to your schedule. A transit visa (category: G) doesn't work for your case.
