Hi, I'll arrive Xi'an on 21 Feb 09 - can you advise if I need a winter jacket? what would be the temperature like? Also, if I want to get an overnight train ticket from Xi'an to Beijing, do I have to book it many days in advance? I can't book the train tickets online right? Many thanks!

I think a winter jacket should be taken in case of the recent changeful temperature here. Although winter is coming to the end, it is said that there will be snow or cold rain soon. Luckily, the mid daytime is warm enough that a warm jacket and sweather are comfortable outside.

As to the ticket, Xi'an Railway Station allows passengers to buy tickets 10 days in advance through phone in Chinese or from the ticket halls directly. No online service is available. And, the trains to Beijing are always popular. So, you'd better to book your seat as early as possible.

Please note that most of the university students will return to schools around the end of Feb, which means that it is more difficult to buy a ticket. You may ask a agent for help!

Thanks Ms Jane

Would you have the contact numbers of the Xi'an Railway Station or agents who can help us with the advance booking? Tried asking around but can't find any that do booking of train tickets in china...

If I call the Xi'an Railway Station and book in advance through phone, do you have any idea how I can make payment and collect the tickets?

Many thanks

Hi Ashley, please forget to book your train through phone! It is because an ID card of China is required by this way. Which hotel will you live in? Some of the good-quality hotels and hostels supply ticket booking for their guests with surcharging 70rmb to 100rmb per ticket. So, try to cotact with your hotel~

But, it may be a miracle that you could buy your tickets once arrive in Xi'an. Please note that the Railway Station only sells tickets =3 days, you have to buy them from those distributed ticket offices in downtown area.

Good luck!

Thanks Ms Jane....I'll try my luck with the hotel then(I'm staying at Grand Mercure on Renmin Square)

By the way, just wondering how much would the taxi fare be from Xi'an airport to Renmin Square? Do the taxis charge by meter or is it based on a pre-agreed amount? Thanks!

Miss your question! The fare should be around 100-120rmb for a cab or 50-70rmb per person. You should bargain with the driver and share the cab with others. Taking taxi is not suggested at Xi'an Airport!
