Fujian province has about 700 dialects of Chinese. Often, they are mutually unintelligble and they cannot understand each other.
Those educated in the PRC learn standard mandarin in school. This is the common language of China.

Hi!! i am originaly from the province of Fujian in China and yes hokkien or fujiness is the main language since most people the live around there are from that area! But in cities in fujian u should stick with speaking mandarin since that is the language most people are going to speak to you in. If you go to a small town the chances are really high that most people speak hokkien unless they were originally from a diffrent provience and therefore speak a diffrent language such as cantonese! Even everyone no matter where you go will be able to understand mandarin since it is the offical language of The People's Republic Of China so no matter where you go they will be able to understand! Shanghai and taiwan have their own dialect and own writing styal so therfore their language differs alittle from mandarin but even then they should be able to understand what you are trying to say
