Ms.Patricia, it will depands on your situation. But the multi-entry visa for 12 months validity is relatively hard to gain. You need apply for X Visa (Student Visa). Generally, the embassy just issues a single-entry X visa with 3-months validity which permits a stay duration of 30 days. Within 30 days after entering China, you need apply for a Residence Permit in a Public Security office in Shanghai.
