Does 72 hours visa work?

We are Canadian flying from Canada, Beijing and on to KL and Australia. When we fly back we come from Phuket, KL, Beijing, Canada. We will be in Beijing for less than 72 hours for each layover there. Do we need visas or will the 72 hour exemption rule work for us?
