Free transit visa in China

I am from the UK, my wife and I fly into Beijing January 23rd arriving at 06.55 morning time and Leave on January 26th 0630 morning time! We then get a flight to CAN with a short stop in the airport to get our final flight to Melbourne! Are we eligible for a free transit visa?

I am afraid not. You have to hold a visa for this case. To use 72h or 144h visa-free transit in Beijing, you may go to HK for a transfer. Then enter Guangzhou.
