Datong vs Pingyao

Hello from Germany!
i will be traveling in China during golden week (I know, it´s the worst decision ever). On Oct 3rd or Oct 4th I will try to get a flight from Kunming to Taiyuan. The last days I wanna spend in Beijing inculding Jinshanling section of The Great Wall (Oct 7th to Oct 11th). In the meantime I had planned to visit Pingyao Ancient Town but I heard it will be very very crowded, so I am considering spending the time in and around DT City.
What´s your opinion, Pingyao or DT? I will have seen Shaxi near Lijang earlier on my trip, so I think DT would be the better place to be and nearer to Beijng.....
