datong vs pingyao

Question

Hello from Germany! i will be traveling in China during golden week (I know, it´s the worst decision ever). On Oct 3rd or Oct 4th I will try to get a flight from Kunming to Taiyuan. The last days I wanna spend in Beijing inculding Jinshanling section of The Great Wall (Oct 7th to Oct 11th). In the meantime I had planned to visit Pingyao Ancient Town but I heard it will be very very crowded, so I am considering spending the time in and around DT City.What´s your opinion, Pingyao or DT? I will have seen Shaxi near Lijang earlier on my trip, so I think DT would be the better place to be and nearer to Beijng..... Thank you very much!

Actually, both Pingyao and DT win high popularity among local people and tourists. Although DT also has many people during the Golden Week, there are more attractions for you to choose, such as Hanging Monastery and Yungang Grottoes. :-)
