I need to know if it is really necessary to provide hotel voucher/ booking confirmation for China visa application.

Yes, round-way air ticket copy and hotel booking copy for your stay in china are required if you want to apply for a China visa in Brunei. Besides, you need to check out with the embassy if the original and a photocopy of residence permit or valid Brunei visa is also needed if you hold Australia passport.
