Is it easy to get an extension to a tourist visa

How difficult is it to get an extension to a travel visa and is it compulsory to apply for it only 7 days before your 30 day visa runs out?

Generally it is not very difficult if you have supportive itinerary and yes, it is better to apply for it 7 days in advance.
