can a direct flight to sanya have a stopover in mainland china city?

All flights from Australia to Sanya invariably stop over in s mainland China city. Does such a flight qualify to be a direct flight?

I'm sorry but no, and it is not a direct flight with a stop over in mainland China. You may choose to stop over in other countries or regions.
