Japan-Hong kong-Shanghai-Japan free transit qualify?

Hello, I'm an American and currently living in Japan and I'm hoping to avoid having to apply for a visa to China for this short 5 day trip. Would this itinerary fit the requirement of the free transit in Shanghai?
