About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

TRANSIT IN BEIJING FOR FREE TRANSIT

I am a US resident traveling from Los Angeles to Vietnam to Hong Kong to Beijing back to Los Angeles. Do I qualify for the 72 hour free transit ?

Additionally, would I qualify if my flight back to Los Angeles from Beijing has a layover in another China city? Or does the layover have to be outside of China?

Hong Kong-Beijing-LA is fine for 72 hrs transit without visa, if you are on non-stop flights. But another stop in China will immediately limit you to 24 hrs.
