About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

If I'm on an x-1 visa with single entry to Beijing and I am going USA to Beijing for 1 day

then to Thailand for 1 week then to Beijing for 4 weeks... will the 24 transit count as one entry NOT on the x-1 and then my longer stay count as single entry on my x-1 ?!

You can request immigration to not utilize your visa and most will be happy to accommodate, but the safest bet is to stay within the transit area if your layover is not too long.
