Will it rain a lot since this is the beginning of the rainy season? Or is it more like rain one day, clear the next or half the day rains but the rest of the day it's dry?

We can't guarantee what's the weather will be like in future. So maybe it's better that you check the weather report just one week or some days before your trip. I live in the city now. From my experience, it won't rain too much in early May if there's no typhoon. The weather will be more like the second case you described.
