Los Angeles, USA to Tokyo to Shanghai return to Los Angels.

We are flying first from the USA to Tokyo February 12 thru 18 then to Shanghai from February 18 thru 22 then return to the USA on the 22nd. Can we use the transit visa? We are transiting thru Shanghai on the way home not on the way to Tokyo... thank you.
