We have an overnight layover in Shenzhen and would like to stay in a hotel. Do we qualify for the temporary stay permit/24 hour transit pass? Paying $140 each to avoid sleeping at the airport is a bit steep for us!

Gabe, after staying for not more than 24 hours in Shenzhen, if you will fly to a third country or region rather than the last one you come from, you will qualify for the 24 hour direct transit in Shenzhen, and then no visa will be needed. You can just apply for a temporary stay permit which is free of charge at the airport. Afterwards, you can go out of the airport and stay at a hotel.
