Can one use the 144 hr transit to visit Shanghai in a round trip manner, or do you have be traveling through China to a different international destination?

Keith, you have to travel through China to a different international destination. If you want to go back to the US after the stay in Shanghai, you can have a layover in another country on your way back before arriving in the US.
