If I wanted to leave the airport at guangzhou for a 12 hour layover, headed to Vietnam, but my American passport expires in 4 months, can I do that? Do I need to get a new passport?

Johnny, as you go from the US to Guangzhou and leave for Vietnam after 12 hours, you can enjoy the 24-hour visa-free transit policy. Your passport is ok, you don't need to renew it.
