short visit to china

Hi! My husband and I are US citizens residing in France.  We are going on a cruise with stops including Shanghai and Hong Kong.  Each visit will last 12 Hours or less before returning to the ship to continue the cruise to other countries.  What kind of visa do we need and how to obtain it?Thank you in advance for the information.Judy

Judy, you don’t need to apply for it because American passport holders can enjoy free entry to HK for a stay of not exceeding 90 days. And your transit in Shanghai is less than 24 hours, you can use the 24 hour direct transit.
