About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a Chinese Visa to Travel to Shanghai, China? I will be in Shanghai less than 72 hours.

I am traveling to Shanghai on Delta next week. I have a US passport.

All my research is telling me that, if I am in Shanghai for less than 72 hours, I do not need a PRC entry permit.

However, 2 different Delta employees have told me that, I need it, before I board my LAX-PVG flight.

Do I need it?

Azz, whether you need to get an entry permit in advance is associated with your flight route. If you fly from US to Shanghai and then to a third country or region, you can take advantage of the 72h free transit policy and you don't need to obtain an entry permit prior to your departure. If you fly from US to Shanghai and then directly go back after the layover, you have to apply for an entry permit.
