About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

do I still need a visa?

fly from Hong Kong to Shanghai then takes the Shanghai Osaka Ferry to Japan in less than 24 hours,.

Tom, you needn't apply one because you are qualified for 24 hours free transit. However, you should have your ferry ticket in hands when you arrive in Shanghai.
