We plan to take the trip from Hangzhou to Suzhou and back again to Hangzhou. Can I purchase the ticket on the same day? Is Friday, Saturday or sunday easy to get it?

The rail transportation between Hangzhou and Suzhou is really convenient. You can buy both trips in Hangzhou at any time before departure. If your travelling date is not during the weekend or holiday, you can even buy it on the departure date. Normally, it is easy to get it.
