About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

I will be flying from Osaka to HK, then Shanghai for 48 hours and then back to US. Is this OK?

You mean you will fly HK - Shanghai - USA
If so, it is OK to enjoy the 72 hours free transit in Shanghai with your passport and your onward air tickets with confirmed seats.
