Do I need to apply for a transit visa in China?

I am a US citizen living in South Korea on an E-2 visa. I want to visit Hong Kong, but my flight may require a layover in China.

May I know which city will you transit within China? some cities allows 72 hour free transit such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Anyway, it is not required if your stopover is no more than 24 hours, in any city.
