Where to get my visa?

Hey I just booked plane tickets to visit China at the end of July. I am an American living and teaching in Korea and I was curious, can I apply directly to a CVASC, or do I need to go through a travel agent? I have read that in the past Americans had to go through a travel agent in Korea and was wondering if that is still the case. Thanks for the help!
