what do i need to get tourist visa to China?

Im a mexican citizen living as a foreign student in Japan, but i plan to go china in march for vacations, what do i need to get it?, how long does the process takes?, and last question, i read above that it is necessary to make the appplication trough a travel agency, is this really necessary?
