can i board the plan without a visa for a two days of transit in shanghai ?

Wouldn't airline require me to have one before let me board the plan?
I plan to arrive shanghai on one airline, then two and half day later, to leave shanghai on American airline to return to US. Do I need to apply for it in order to enter China?

No, you enjoy free transit in Shanghai for a stay less than 72 hours as long as you hold confirmed ticket leaving from Shanghai airport.
