connecting to shanghai

i want to connect from beijing to shanghai and would prefer the fast train. i am reaching beijing at around midnight, what's the best way to connect to shanghai

Well, the first high speed train from Beijing to Shanghai departs at 07:00. Thus, you need to stay over night in Beijing upon arrival. You'd better book a hotel nearby Beijing South Railway Station. The next day, you can go to the train station to catch the first high speed train for Shanghai.
