do i need a visa for 17 hours in china?

I have a 17 hour stopover in guangzhou and wish to leave the airport and go into the city, will i need any kind of visa to do this?

You need a transit visa because you will leave the airport. If you don't have time to obtain a transit visa in advance, you can try to apply for 24 hours stay permit when you arrive in Guangzhou airport, then leave the airport.
