can you change an l visa to a z visa, ideally without leaving beijing?

Question

I have signed my contract for a teaching position in Sept but am attending a training camp Aug 12th. My flight leaves Aug 8th and China have only just started the application process for our documents to be sent to the UK. As there is just not enough time is there any way of getting out to china on an L visa and converting it in mainland China?

L visa can be converted into Z visa within China through visa agency, with help of your employer as well. The service fee is expensive as I know, but it is applicable if you have no other choice.  To apply in HK in person is also ok.
